Speaking of wich, with regards to your post on Stanley Praimnath's desk I conducted some of my own experiments in Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 4 and Doom 3 and Battlefield 2. My tests have shown that your basic office cubicle walls and desks are capable of withstanding multiple grenade, missile, small arms and main battle tank cannon shell hits.
A peice of furniture wich protects aginst a direct hit from a BFG 9000 should easily protect against a jet engine.

where did the rest of it go? in order to have pancaking, a force is required to trigger the failure of the next floor. if the building above that floor has been pulverized, there can be no force pushing down. any pulverized material remaining over the footprint of the building will be suspended in the air and can't contribute to a downward force slamming onto the next floor.
