Culling Humanity via Food Shortages

A surprisingly dire warning from Paul Krugman:
Over the past few years the prices of wheat, corn, rice and other basic foodstuffs have doubled or tripled, with much of the increase taking place just in the last few months. High food prices dismay even relatively well-off Americans — but they’re truly devastating in poor countries, where food often accounts for more than half a family’s spending.

There have already been food riots around the world. Food-supplying countries, from Ukraine to Argentina, have been limiting exports in an attempt to protect domestic consumers, leading to angry protests from farmers — and making things even worse in countries that need to import food.

Hi, Spooked, listen up.

Most of what there is to criticize about food and biofuels has to do with our corrupt financial system that favors big biz, gives them all the breaks, etc, etc. But ethanol production really can be a boon to our society and others as well. Barry Commoner wrote it is always possible to do a good thing stupidly and too much of biofuel production is just that.
But if we do it right and start healing the planet, using permaculture, etc, etc, it can really have an impact. This is what is getting lost in all of the biofuel bashing that goes on. Production of biofuels is the only process that can result, if done right, in carbon-negative energy. That's right, negative, not neutral.
